Yordan Alvarez Signs $115 Million Six-Year Extension with Huston Astros

Yordan Alvarez became one of the Houston Astros’ key players since joining the team in 2019, and he’s not going anywhere! The Cuban MLB star signed a six-year extension with the Astros, reportedly worth $115 million. Alvarez’s new contract is set to kick off next season, keeping him on the team until 2028. It buys out three of his free-agent years and guarantees him $26 million a year. The deal is quite historic since it’s the fifth-largest contract for a pre-arbitration player. The record is still held by Fernando Tatis Jr.'s 14-year, $340 million contract with the San Diego Padres. Alvarez kicked off his baseball career by playing two seasons in the Cuban National Series before defecting from Cuba and signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers as an international free agent in 2016. He was quickly traded to the Houston Astros and made his MLB debut with this team in 2019. Alvarez has proven himself as a valuable asset from the get-go and was unanimously named American League Rookie of the Year in 2019. In his debut season, he posted the highest slugging percentage by a qualified rookie in history. He was also named the 2021 American League Championship Series MVP, becoming the first designated hitter since David Ortiz to win the award.
