Tributes Pour in for Christian Atsu Following His Death in Turkey Earthquake

Ghanaian football player Christian Atsu has been found dead, two weeks after going missing following the devastating Turkey earthquake. Atsu’s agent confirmed the tragic news, and tributes poured in from all around the world, including his former club Newcastle United. Atsu has been missing since February 6, when an earthquake caused the collapse of his apartment in Antakya. The 31-year-old football player moved to Turkey earlier this year, after signing a one-year contract with the Süper Lig club Hatayspor. Atsu’s agent Nana Sechere confirmed he’s been found dead and sent condolences to his family. In addition to playing for the Ghana national team, Atsu had spells with several Premier League, most notably Newcastle. They released an official statement following his passing and honored him with a minute of applause before Saturday’s game against Liverpool. “We are profoundly saddened to learn that Christian Atsu has tragically lost his life in Turkey’s devastating earthquakes. A talented player and a special person, he will always be fondly remembered by our players, staff, and supporters. Rest in peace, Christian.” Atsu started his international football career at Porto when he was 17 years old, before signing his Premier League deal with Chelsea in 2017. He never got to actually play for the Blues and was loaned to several clubs during his tenure, including Newcastle United. This loan led to his permanent deal with Newcastle, where he stayed between 2017 and 2021.
