Tributes Pour in Following the Passing of Football Legend Pelé

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, best known as Pelé, died at the age of 82 after a battle with cancer. Tributes poured in from every corner of the world, and football fans continue to mourn the death of the Brazilian legend, who went down in history as one of the best football players of all time. Pele passed away due to multiple organ failures, associated with his previous colon cancer diagnosis. Pele's Twitter account confirmed the news tweeting, "Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love, and love, forever." Many of the world’s leading football players, including Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi, paid tributes to Pelé, and so did countless public figures around the globe. Several attractions in Pelé’s home country of Brazil were lit up in his honor, including Christ the Redeemer and Maracanã Stadium. The Brazilian Football Confederation also released a statement following Pelé’s passing, saying, “Our king of football was the greatest exponent of a victorious Brazil, who was never afraid when faced with difficulty… The King gave us a new Brazil and we are so thankful for his legacy.” Pelé was just 17 when he won the World Cup for the first time, becoming the youngest player to participate in, score, and win a World Cup final in 1958. Two more World Cup wins followed, in 1962 and 1970. He remains the only player to win the tournament three times and holds many major World Cup records to this day.
