Oscar Piastri Races to His First Formula 1 Title at Hungarian Grand Prix

This year’s Formula 1 season has truly been one wild ride, and the Hungarian Grand Prix resulted in another dramatic race. Oscar Piastri scored an unexpected win in Hungary, leaving Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton in the dust to win his maiden Grand Prix. Norris started the race in pole position, but quickly lost his lead to his McLaren teammate Piastri. Championship leader Max Verstappen was right behind them, but their three-car fight eventually fizzled out, allowing Piastri to lead Norris for most of the race. Radio messages between Norris and McLaren's team stirred a lot of commotion in Hungary. He was repeatedly asked to slow down and let Piastri back past so he could claim the win but obeyed the request to move aside with just two laps remaining. He finished behind Piastri, helping McLaren claim a one-two finish, while Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton finished third. Piastri said that McLaren's team orders drama doesn't take away from his triumph and that he’s happy about his achievement despite all the commotion behind the scenes. “I think the team really wanted to make sure we locked down a one-two and I think at the time it was a very sensible call. Of course, it swapped the order round and I completely get why Lando wanted to ask so many questions about swapping back. He’s leading a race and we all want to win, so I get it from both sides,” Piastri told reporters.
