New York Mets Make Miraculous Ninth-Inning Comeback Against Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies were a clear favorite to defeat the New York Mets on Thursday night, but luck wasn’t on their side. Despite a six-run deficit, the Mets managed to make a historic comeback in the ninth inning, beating the Phillies 8-7. This marks the first time since 1997 that the Mets trailed by at least six runs in the ninth inning, and still managed to win the game. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it’s also only the third time in the team’s history that they came back from at least six runs down to win the game. One of the players responsible for the Mets’ epic comeback was outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who tied the game 7-7 with a two-run single before Starling Marte sealed the deal. "These guys, they don’t give up. With that mentality, anything is possible… I'm an optimist, I just keep going until they blow the whistle. You just never give up. The stats can say all they want. They can say it can’t be done. But that’s why you play the game," said Nimmo after the game. This victory comes shortly after the Mets’ disappointing loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, and they’ll face the Phillies again in their next game.
