Lionel Messi Sets Major Champions League Record in PSG’s Draw with Benfica

Paris St-Germain’s recent match against Benfica ended in a disappointing draw, but it was still a big night for Lionel Messi. PSG’s star player scored Wednesday night’s only goal for his team and set a major Champions League record along the way. Messi’s impressive curling shot gave PSG a 1-0 lead 22 minutes into the game, but their celebration didn’t last for too long. The first half ended with a draw minutes before halftime due to Danilo Pereira’s catastrophic own goal. PSG spent the second half trying to make a comeback, but the match eventually ended in a 1-1 draw. Despite failing to lead PSG to another victory, Messi had a reason to celebrate on Wednesday night. Benfica became the 40th club that he scored against in the Champions League, making him the only player in history to reach this number. He’s now two teams ahead of the previous record holder Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored against 38 different teams. Messi is yet to break Ronaldo’s record for most overall goals scored in the Champions League. The Argentinian striker netted 127 goals so far, but he’s still got a long way to go before coming close to the Manchester United forward, who’s leading the scoring board with a total of 140 goals in this competition.
