Cristiano Ronaldo Scores Twice as Portugal Thrash Luxembourg at Euro 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo’s time on the national team has been pretty rocky in recent months, but he made a glorious comeback at Euro 2024. He led Portugal to an epic 6-0 win against Luxembourg by scoring twice in the first half. Portugal was in a conformable lead just nine minutes into the game when Ronaldo scored his first goal, followed by another about 20 minutes later. He isn’t the only player responsible for Portugal’s thrashing of Luxembourg – Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva, and substitutes Otavio and Rafael Leao all scored one goal each for the winning side. This marks Ronaldo's first game with Portugal since the World Cup when his track record wasn’t so brilliant. He was introduced as a substitute in the country's quarter-final defeat to Morocco, leaving his future with the national team in doubt. The team’s new manager Roberto Martínez put the rumors of his omission from the national team to rest, naming him in Portugal's squad for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers. "A player like Cristiano brings experience, he is an important figure in the team. I don't look at age or other aspects. I think Cristiano has an opportunity to help the team and transmit the experience of his career to the other players,” Martínez said at the time. Ronaldo become the most capped men's player in international football at Euro 2024, with his 197th appearance for Portugal against Liechtenstein. He also extended his record for most international football goals to 122 against Luxembourg.
