Canada Takes First Place in World Cup Qualifying After Defeating Mexico

Canada hasn’t scored a win against Mexico in a World Cup qualifier for decades, but that finally changed during their latest face-off. Team Canada secured first place in the CONCACAF qualifying standings after beating Mexico 2-1. This win was quite a shocker since it marks Mexico's first loss to Canada since 2000 and the first World Cup qualifying loss since 1976. Canada now sits in first place with 16 points, followed by the United States with 15 after a recent 1-1 draw with Jamaica. Mexico is tied with Panama in the third spot with 14 points. Canada’s win against Mexico is a big moment for the team, and Cyle Larin is the one who made it possible. He scored two goals that helped his team come out victorious but stayed humble and gave credit to the rest of the players. "I'm happy to tie the record and hopefully beat it, but I wouldn't be able to do it without my teammates. The quality of the guys in front and the guys in the back end and we all played a part in it," said Larin after the match. Mexico did their best to claw their way to a draw in the final minutes of the game. The late goal from Héctor Herrera gave them a fleeting hope, but it was already too late for an epic comeback.
