Canada Qualifies for Their First World Cup in 36 Years

Canada hasn’t had the greatest track record at World Cup in the last few decades, but they’ll have a chance to change that in Qatar. The Canadian team secured a spot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup after defeating Jamaica on Sunday, qualifying for the tournament for the first time in 36 years. Canada was on fire playing against Jamaica at BMO Field in Toronto and managed to score a dominant victory at home. Jamaica failed to net a single goal against Canada, losing 4-0. Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan led Canada to a confident lead in the first half, before Junior Hoilett and an own goal by Adrian Mariappa sealed the deal in the second. This win marks another major triumph for the team’s head coach John Herdman, who led the Canadian women's team to two Olympics bronze medals, before joining the men’s team in 2018. "I think this country never believed in us because we've given them nothing to believe in. They believe now. This is the time for everyone to get behind football and unite because we can be a powerhouse,” said Herdman. This will be Canada’s first appearance at the World Cup since 1986, when they made it to the group stage but finished at the bottom of their group without scoring a single goal.
