Tennis World Bids Farewell to Roger Federer As He Announces His Retirement

Roger Federer, one of the biggest tennis stars of the modern era with 20 Grand Slam titles to his name, has announced his retirement. The Swiss tennis legend is planning to step away from professional tennis after playing his last game at the upcoming Laver Cup. All hell broke loose on Thursday when Federer shared a lengthy statement on social media announcing his retirement. He expressed gratitude to all the people who’ve been a part of his journey and reflected on the struggles he’s faced in recent years. “I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form, but I also know my body’s capacities and limits and its message to me lately has been clear... Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt and now I must recognise when it's time to end my competitive career,” wrote Federer in his statement. The Swiss tennis legend will play his last match at the next week’s Laver Cup in London. This men's tennis tournament is fought between teams from Europe and the rest of the world, and Federer will be representing Europe along with his great rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, commonly known as the Big Three. Federer’s rise in the tennis world started in 2003 when he won his first major singles title at Wimbledon. It was the first of 20 Grand Slam titles he went on to collect, in addition to winning a total of 103 ATP singles titles over the course of 24 years.
