This year’s World Match Play Championship was full of ups and downs, but it was nothing but a good time for Sam Burns. Following Scottie Scheffler’s dramatic semi-final defeat, Burns ended up beating Cameron Young to lift the trophy in Austin, Texas on Sunday. One of the tournament’s biggest shockers came when Young eliminated world no. 3 McIlroy in the same-finals. Burns also had a great track record going into the final, and he stopped world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler to make it to the next round of the tournament. Burns truly found his footing against Young and easily beat him 6&5. He credited his win against Scheffler for helping him find his confidence and keep up the momentum going into the tournament’s final stage. “I know he didn't have his best stuff, but it was a great match. I mean, I feel like I got off to kind of a – not a great start, but felt like I kind of found something at the end of my match this morning with Scottie, and I was able to carry that on this afternoon,” said Burns following his victory. The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play marks the fifth PGA Tour victory for Burns, who entered the tournament as the 13th seed.
