Rohan Bopanna on Track to Become Oldest Men’s Doubles No. 1

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden reached the Australian Open doubles semi-finals with their latest win, and this moment was quite history-making. The 43-year-old Bopanna is on track to hit no. 1 in the men’s doubles rankings following this win, becoming the oldest tennis player to do so. Bopanna and Ebden defeated Argentine pair Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in Melbourne and scored an epic 6-4 7-6 (7-5) win. They made it to the next round of competition and are now set to face Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen in the semi-finals. No matter the outcome of their next match, Bopanna will move to the top of the world men’s doubles rankings when they're updated on Monday. He’ll thus become the oldest player to hit No. 1, breaking the record previously held by Mike Bryan. Bopanna told the reporters that the news hasn’t fully sunk in yet, and he’s hoping his historic achievement will inspire other people to chase their dreams. "I think Indian tennis, India needed this. We don't really have many tennis players coming up. Sport is slowly coming up. I think it's just going to inspire a lot of people… People all over the world, being 40 and above, I think it's just going to inspire them in a different way," said Bopanna.
