Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Montreal Ahead of 2022 US Open

The National Bank Open is coming back to Montreal next week, but Rafael Nadal won’t be one of the players taking part. The Spanish tennis champion announced he’s withdrawing from this tournament due to an abdominal injury. Montreal was supposed to mark Nadal’s first tournament since Wimbledon, where his quest for the title also ended in a withdrawal. Despite defeating Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinal and qualifying to face Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final, he decided to drop out of the tournament due to the same abdominal injury that caused his Montreal exit. Nadal released an official statement announcing that he won’t appear in Montreal after speaking to his doctor. They came to a conclusion that he needs more time to recover from his injury and he thanked tournament organizers for understating and supporting his decision. “I am very sad not to finally travel to Montréal. It’s a tournament that I have won 5 times and I love to play there. I seriously hope I can come back there to play in front of the amazing crowds up there,” explained the Spaniard. Nadal’s withdrawal from Montreal casts a shadow of doubt over his US Open hope since the National Bank Open serves as a warm-up for this tournament. It’s taking place from August 8–14, with Daniil Medvedev defending the title from last year.
