He went on a rollercoaster journey since the beginning of the Australian Open and managed to beat Daniil Medvedev in the epic final, scoring the record 21st Grand Slam title. Nadal was down on his luck in the first two sets, and it seemed like Medvedev would come out victorious after he took the lead. The Spaniard managed to make a comeback in the third set and eventually rallied to win 2-6 6-7 6-4 6-4 7-5, after five hours and 24 minutes of play. Nadal’s victory is especially impressive since it comes shortly after he took a break from tennis to focus on his health. He ended his 2021 season back in August to recover from a foot injury and returned to the court in mid-December. "Being honest one month and a half ago I did not know if I would be back on the tour playing tennis again. Today I am here in front of you with this trophy. You don't know how much it means to be back here,” said Nadal after the game. Nadal won a record 21st Grand Slam men's title at the Australian Open, breaking the record he previously shared with Novak Djokovic and Rodger Federer. He’s also only the second man after Djokovic to achieve the double career Grand Slam in the Open Era.
