Owen Power has been with the Buffalo Sabres since the very start of his NFL career, and he’s not going anywhere. The 20-year-old ice hockey defenceman locked up 7-year extensions with the Sabres, reportedly worth $58.5 million. Power was drafted first overall by the Sabres in 2021, after playing college ice hockey for the University of Michigan. His extension will kick off in 2024-25, when the final season of his entry-level contract expires, and his new deal carries an $8.35-million cap hit. Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams said that their conversations with Power made it clear this is where he wants to be, and he’s committed to helping the team going forward. “When you have a player that you feel is a critical piece of your core at his age, to have him in his prime years, yeah, of course, we'd look to the longer side… I’m open to making sure we're putting ourselves and the player in the best position moving forward,” said Adams. Power isn’t the only key player that the Buffalo Sabres locked up recently. Earlier this week, they also signed an eight-year extension with the team’s alternate captain and Power's fellow defenceman Rasmus Dahlin, worth a whopping $88 million.
