Novak Djokovic Heading to Australian Open After Getting Medical Exemption

There’s been a lot of speculations about Novak Djokovic’s return to the Australian Open after he repeatedly declined to disclose his vaccination status, but that’s not stopping him from taking part in the tournament. The world no. 1 will defend his title after receiving a medical exemption. Djokovic’s participation in the event was confirmed in an official statement released by the Australian Open organizers, which reads: “Djokovic applied for a medical exemption which was granted following a rigorous review process involving two separate independent panels of medical experts.” The Serbian tennis champion also confirmed he’ll be competing in one of his recent social media posts. He can be seen posing with his luggage at an airport, and the photo is followed by a caption, “I’m heading Down Under with an exemption permission. Let’s go 2022!” This decision sparked a lot of backlash because the Australian Open officials previously claimed that the players would have to be fully vaccinated in order to participate. Novak Djokovic is the holder of a record nine Australian Open titles, and he won the last three tournaments in a row. If he manages to win again, he’ll score his 21st Grand Slam title, breaking the record that he currently shares with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
