Kyrgios faced China's Wu Yibing in the tournament’s opening round, but it quickly became clear he was not on top of his game. The former Wimbledon finalist lost 7-5 6-3 in his first match this season after having surgery to repair a small tear in his left lateral meniscus back in January. Kyrgios took to Twitter after his loss and asked his fans to be patient with him because he’s still on the path to improve his game. Kyrgios’ loss in Germany comes shortly after he opened up about his struggles with mental health and admitted he contemplated suicide after his Wimbledon loss in 2019. "That pressure, having that 'all eyes on you' expectation, I couldn't deal with it. I hated the kind of person I was. I lost my relationship with my family, pushed all my close friends away… I ended up in a psych ward in London to figure out my problems,” said Kyrgios while discussing his Netflix documentary “Breaking Point”.
