The stunning shot he played from a fairway bunker on the 18th green helped him score the big win and become the third Englishman to win the U.S. Open in the past 52 years. Fitzpatrick came into the tournament feeling more confident than ever and celebrated his victory with an emotional social media post, where he reflected on his journey. “What. A. Day. From being a little kid this is a moment I could only dream of. To achieve one of my career goals yesterday was truly incredible. Words really can’t describe the feeling of winning a major, it’s 1,000x better than I ever thought it would be,” wrote Fitzpatrick on Twitter. Fitzpatrick’s first major championship title comes almost a decade after he won the U.S. Amateur title at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. This makes him only the second male golfer to win both of these events at the same venue, following in the footsteps of Jack Nicklaus.
