Marketa Vondrousova Becomes First Unseeded Woman in Open Era to Win Wimbledon

Markéta Vondroušová came into this year’s Wimbledon as one of the biggest underdogs and managed to exceed everyone’s expectations. She defeated Ons Jabeur in the final to make history as the first unseeded player to win this Grand Slam in Open Era. The race for the women's singles trophy at Wimbledon was as wild as it gets, and seeing Vondroušová lift it was just the last in a long series of shockers. The top seed Iga Świątek was surprisingly eliminated in the quarterfinals, and so was the tournament’s defending champion Elena Rybakina. Vondroušová defeated another unseeded player – the wildcard Elina Svitolina – to book a meeting with Jabeur in the finals. She was on top of her game once that moment came, and defeated the Tunisian player in just two sets, 6-4 6-4. Jabeur admitted it was “very, very tough” to watch the Wimbledon trophy slip away, and described this defeat as the most painful loss of her career. Vondrousova said she felt “crazy nervous” throughout a match, adding it’s an amazing feeling to even be there since she was struggling with injuries this time last year. “It’s not always easy to come back. You don’t know if you can play at this level and if you can be back at the top and back at these tournaments. I just feel like I’m just grateful to be on a court again, to play without pain,” said Vondrousova following her victory.
