Kamila Valieva’s Olympic Future Jeopardized Due to Doping Concerns

Kamila Valieva is one of the biggest stars to emerge at the Winter Olympics, but her downfall could be as dramatic as her rise. The teen figure skater cast a dark cloud over the Beijing Games after a failed drugs test, which left her Olympic future in jeopardy. Valieva made history as the first woman to land a quadruple jump at the Olympic Games, leading the Russian Olympic Committee to the golden medal at the team event in figure skating. Her celebration was short-lived after she tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned drug that can increase endurance and blood flow efficiency. Valieva was one of the favorites to win the women’s singles competition, but her future at the Olympics remains a mystery after her urine sample submitted on December 25 came back positive. Since the sample wasn’t taken during the Olympics, it initially seemed like her actions won’t be under review, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is now in charge of determining her future after hearing her case. The 15-year-old figure skater is no stranger to doping accusations, and she previously successfully appealed Russian Anti-Doping Agency’s suspension. The International Olympic Committee indefinitely postponed the medal ceremony for the team event in the face of legal issues concerning Valieva.
