Joel Embiid and 76ers Agree to $196 Million Contract Extension

Joel Embiid spent the entirety of his professional NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers, and he’s sticking to his team. The All-Star center signed a multi-year contract extension with the Sixers, worth a reported $196 million according to multiple sources. Embiid was picked by the 76ers in the 2014 NBA draft, but it took a while before he made a debut for the team due to multiple foot and knee surgeries. When he finally put on his 76ers uniform during the 2016–17 season, he was quickly named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and went on to become a four-time All-Star. Embiid proved to be a valuable player for the Sixers and averaged 24.8 points and 11.3 boards in 260 games across five seasons. His new contract extension will keep him on the through the 2026-27 season, and it’s even more impressive than the previous $147.7 million, five-year deal that he signed in 2017. Josh Harris, the team's managing partner, had nothing but words of praise for Embiid after announcing his contract extension and said they couldn’t be more grateful and excited to continue watching him in a 76ers uniform. "Joel is the definition of elite - a role model in our community and a true MVP-caliber superstar on the court. His rare blend of skills, charisma, and leadership has transformed this franchise,” said Harris in a news release.
