Giannis Antetokounmpo represented Greece in several tournaments over the years, but the upcoming FIBA World Cup won’t be one of them. The Milwaukee Bucks superstar announced he’ll have to miss this event after undergoing a knee procedure earlier this summer. Antetokounmpo released an emotional statement on social media, explaining that he pushed his body to the limits in the hope he’ll be able to help out his national team. After several months of work and multiple meetings with medical staff, he was forced to officially announce his withdrawal from the FIBA World Cup. The Greek Freak said he's extremely disappointed by this outcome, but explained he made this decision with the medical staff following his knee surgery this summer. “This was not a choice but my only option in ensuring I get back to the level of basketball I have worked so hard to achieve so far in my career… I’m going to continue to push myself to be ready for the next time my name is called,” he wrote in a statement. Antetokounmpo took part in several major international events with the Greek national team over the years, including the World Cup, EuroBasket, and Olympic qualifiers. He was on top of his game at the EuroBasket 2022 and was crowned as its top scorer after averaging 29.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game.
