Germany came into this year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup as one of the underdogs, but that didn’t stop them from winning the whole thing. They defeated Serbia in the final to lift their very first FIBA World Cup trophy, while Dennis Schröder was crowned as the tournament’s MVP. The first two halves of the match were as tense as it gets, and Germany and Serbia leveled at 47-47 halfway through the game. Germany managed to swing the match in their favor in the third half when they outscored Serbia 22-10 and eventually defeated them 83-77, to be crowned champions of the FIBA World Cup for the first time. Dennis Schröder was the final’s top scorer with 29 points for Germany, and he walked away with the tournament’s MVP Award. The team’s coach Gordon Herbert said this win would’ve been impossible without the 29-year-old point guard. "He has done something that nobody else has done in Germany and I think people will realize that now in Germany, what he's done and what he's meant to German basketball and how he's become a leader of this team," said Herbert. The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup was hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia between August 25 and September 10, and Canada took the bronze medal after defeating the United States 127-118.
