George Russell Reflects on Mercedes’ Disappointing 2022 Season

This past Formula 1 season was pretty messy for Mercedes, with their driver George Russell finishing fourth in World Championship rankings. The 24-year-old is hoping he’ll be able to leave the disappointment behind as Mercedes comes back stronger next season. Russel recently set down with BBC Radio Norfolk to discuss the past season and his plans for the future. He’s still confident in Mercedes’ ability to build a fast race car, and that they’re going to be in a much stronger position from the very first race last year. While staying hopeful about the future, Russell didn’t hide his frustration with the way things went down this season. He expected victories when he joined Mercedes and felt ready to fight for race wins and championships, but had to manage his expectations in the face of the team’s troubles. “If you'd told me at the start of the year that I'd be finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton, I'd have been very happy because nine times out of 10 that probably means you're going to be world champion. It's a little bit frustrating that this year wasn't that year,” said Russell. Russell brought Mercedes its only victory this season in the penultimate race at Sao Paulo and finished fourth in the rankings, 35 points and two spots ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
