French Open Announces Pay Increase With €50 Million in Total Prize Money

The French Open is returning to Paris later this month, and tennis players will have a lot to look forward to once it comes back. The year’s most-anticipated clay tournament officially announced a pay increase for this year, with the total prize money rising to €50 million. The prize money for this year amounts to €49.6 million, and it represents a jump of 12.3% from 2022, according to the tournament’s press release. “With the aim of ensuring a more even distribution between players, the tournament organizers have significantly increased the prize money for first-round losers in the women’s and men’s singles draws and the amounts awarded in the qualifying, wheelchair tennis, and quad competitions,” reads the tournament’s statement. The men's and women's champions are now set to receive €2.3 million again, after the prizes experienced a significant drop during the pandemic, going all the way down to €1.4 million in 2021. As for women's and men's doubles champions, payouts are 4% higher this year, and each winning pair is set to receive €590,000. Losing players in the opening three rounds of the singles draw also have a reason to celebrate since they’re set to receive between 11% and 13% more this year. The qualifying round of the French Open will kick off on May 22, while the main draw will take place between May 28 and June 11.
