Former US Open Champion Dominic Thiem Returning to Tennis Next Month

Dominic Thiem took a long break from tennis shortly after winning the US Open in 2020 and he’s finally plotting his comeback. The Austrian tennis player said he’s planning to return to action at Indian Wells in March after taking some time to recover from a serious wrist injury. Thiem slipped to no. 37 in the world rankings, after announcing his decision to step away from tennis back in June last year. He withdrew from several major events due to his wrist injury, including the Tokyo Olympics and the US Open, failing to defend his crown in 2021. The former US Open champion has been plotting his return for quite some time, but his plans repeatedly fell through. Thiem was hoping to make a comeback at the 2022 Australian Open in January and then the Córdoba Open in February but stepped away from both tournaments to focus on his recovery. "It's never easy to come back after being away from competition for seven months. I will follow my doctor's advice and after resting a couple of days, I will start training again next week. I need some consistent time on-court before making my comeback,” explained the former no. 3. Thiem is currently busy training in Vienna and getting ready to hit the tennis court again at the Indian Wells Masters, set to kick off on March 7.
