Daniil Medvedev’s star has been on the rise for quite some time, and he just managed to reach one of the most important milestones of his career. The Russian tennis champion assumed the no. 1 spot in the ATP rankings, replacing Novak Djokovic after 361 weeks at the top. Medvedev most recently took part in the Mexican Open but ended up losing to Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. That didn’t stop him from taking the no. 1 spot from Djokovic with a total of 8,615 points, after the Serbian player lost in the Dubai quarterfinals. To make the whole thing even more impressive, Medvedev is the first player outside of the “Big Four” of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray to hold the no. 1 spot in over 18 years, and he couldn’t be prouder of his achievement. “Of course I am happy to reach No 1. It was my goal since I was young and especially my goal in the latest times. I got a lot of messages from many people and from other tennis players and I just want to thank everybody for the big support," said the Russian player. Medvedev’s current status as the top man in tennis could be put into jeopardy as the ITF considers banning his home country from all individual and team events, shortly after banning all tennis events taking place in Russia.
