Daniil Medvedev Eliminated from 2023 French Open in the First Round

After a series of epic wins, Daniil Medvedev came into this year’s French Open as one of the front-runners, but his clay season was cut short. The Russian tennis star was eliminated in the very first round by qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild. Medvedev and Seyboth Wild gave us one of the most intense matches of the French Open so far in the very first round, and the Brazilian eventually managed to come out victorious in this five set-thriller, winning 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (6-8) 2-6 6-3 6-4 after over four hours. Medvedev came into this year’s French Open after scoring his very first clay-court title in Rome, and this isn’t his first first-round loss in Paris. The Russian player battled windy conditions and "a mouthful of clay" this time around, and even said he was “happy” that his clay season was over because he hates playing on this surface. As for Seyboth Wild, the 172nd-ranked player was head over heels after scoring the biggest win of his career, and he’ll face Argentina's Guido Pella in the second round. "I watched Daniil play since I was a junior and beating him on such a court is a dream come true… I don't really have words to describe what I felt when I won the match. I was just super happy. It definitely was the happiest day of my life," he said post-match.
