Dan Evans Wins His First ATP 500 Title at Citi Open

Dan Evans’ quest for his very first ATP 500 title was pretty long, but it’s finally over. The British tennis player defeated Tallon Griekspoor to be crowned champion at the Citi Open final in Washington DC, claiming the biggest title of his career. Evans defeated Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov on his way to the final, and Griekspoor was the last opponent standing in his way. The match was stopped early in the second set due to rain and lightning, but that didn’t stop Evans from lifting the trophy after beating the Dutchman 7-5 6-3. This victory is a huge deal for the 33-year-old tennis star, who became the first British player to win this tournament in two decades, since Tim Henman in 2003. "I wasn't playing very well and I wasn't happy with my game. To do the work I've done and to stick with it and come through is [amazing]. The last game sort of summed up my week. I got out of trouble and it was an amazing week. I really appreciate all the support," said Evans. American 19-year-old Coco Gauff also had a reason to celebrate at the Citi Open this year, after defeating Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-3 to win the women's title.
