Carlos Alcaraz Tops ATP Rankings Following First Major Win at US Open

Carlos Alcaraz’s rise to the top was a joy to watch, and it was just a matter of time before he scored his first Grand Slam victory. That moment finally arrived at the US Open, where the teen sensation defeated Casper Ruud in the final, becoming the world number one in the process. Rudd and Alcaraz stayed on the court for about three and half hours, but the Spanish teen eventually managed to score a 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 win. His road to the US Open trophy was a rocky one, and he defeated Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe in spectacular five-set matches to secure a spot in the final. Alcaraz said he’s hungry for more after this victory, and he’s hoping to stay the ATP number one for many weeks – if not even many years – to come. “I just can say that I'm really happy to move on to be no. 1 of the world, still growing… I never thought that I was going to achieve something like that at 19 years old. For me it's unbelievable. It's something I dreamt since I was a kid, since I started playing tennis,” said Alcaraz following his win. Alcaraz set several major records with his US Open victory, becoming the youngest Grand Slam winner since Rafael Nadal in 2005, the youngest US Open champion since Pete Sampras in 1990, and the youngest man to be ranked world no. 1.
