Canada Beats Team USA To Win Women's Hockey Gold in Beijing

We can always count on Canada and the USA to give it their all while battling each other for women’s ice hockey gold at the Winter Olympics. Their latest showdown was no exception, and Canada eventually came out victorious 3-2, winning their fifth title at this Olympic event. The rivalry between the two hockey superpowers continued in Beijing, marking the sixth time they faced each other in the women's ice hockey gold medal match. Canada led 3-0 in the second period, with captain Marie-Philip Poulin scoring twice. Team USA wasn’t giving up so easily, and they managed to hit back with two goals in the final period, but it was too late to make a comeback. The medal ceremony included a touching moment when a veteran Canadian forward Natalie Spooner put her gold medal around coach Troy Ryan’s neck. Coaches aren’t recognized with medals at the Olympics, and this was her way of giving credit where credit is due. “We just wanted to make sure they got their moment. Management. Coaches. They’ve been a huge part of this team and the success that we’ve had. They’ve been our true leaders and they’ve made us the team that we are,” said Spooner. Women's hockey was introduced as an Olympic event at the 1998 Winter Olympics, and Canada won five out of seven gold medals so far.
