Biniam Girmay Makes History with His Giro d'Italia Win

Biniam Girmay is a relative newcomer in the road cycling world, but that’s not stopping him from making waves and breaking records. The Eritrean cyclist made history as the first Black African cyclist to win a Grand Tour stage at the 2022 Giro d'Italia. Girmay made his Grand Tour debut at this year's Giro and secured a Stage 10 win with a sensational sprint, covering 196 km of the hilly stage between Pescara and Jesi. He’s no stranger to setting records, and this win comes shortly after he became the first African to win a World Tour race at Belgium's Gent-Wevelgem. “When I started the Giro we had the possibility to win and make good results – this is also part of the success of our team, my family and everybody. Every day comes new history so I’m really grateful and happy that I did it,” said the 22-year-old cyclist. Girmay’s win was overshadowed by an incident that happened while he was celebrating his latest triumph. He hit himself in his left eye with a prosecco cork on the podium and missed the post-race news conference after being taken to a hospital for a check-up. His team is yet to make the call about his future at the Giro d'Italia as the race continues.
