2022 Winter Olympics Closes in Beijing with Norway Topping Medal Table

The 2022 Winter Olympics had us glued to our seats with many wild twists and turns they had in store before ending their run on Sunday. The closing ceremony was as epic as the rest of the event, especially for Norway, since they topped the medal table for the second consecutive time. Norway was a clear leader with a total of 37 medals, including 16 gold, 8 silver, and 13 bronze medals. To make the whole thing even more impressive, they also set a new record for the most amount of gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics. The team representing the ROC was close behind with a total of 32 medals. Unfortunately, only six of them were gold, and Russia’s time at the Olympics was plagued with controversy due to the anti-doping scandal concerning the Russian teen figure skater Kamila Valieva. Germany also had an impressive showing, with a total of 27 medals, including 12 golds, 10 silvers, and 5 bronzes. The Beijing Games also marked the most successful performance for the host country of China, with 9 gold medals, out of 15 total. Canada had a pretty impressive showing with a total of 26 medals, but only 4 of them were gold, pushing this Winter Olympics powerhouse outside the top ten in the medal table for the first time in over three decades. The closing ceremony on Sunday featured the traditional passing of the Olympic flag, as China handed hosting duties over to Italy, with the next Winter Games taking place in Milan-Cortina in 2026.
